The Costs Of Importing A Car Into Spain Explained.

The cost of importing your car or other vehicle type onto Spanish number plates depends on a number of factors and there can even be a differences between the various regions of Spain that all have slightly different tax levies. However the majority of the cost of import is based on vehicle value and the CO2 emissions.

Calculating Import Duty / Registration Tax

Registration tax will be somewhere between 0% and 16% of the vehicles value determined by the Spanish tax office, the calculation being based on both the value and the CO2 emissions. As you’d expect, the lower the vehicle value and particularly the CO2 emissions, the lower the import duty.

Other Taxes and Payments – Cost To Import Car Into Spain

There are a number of other smaller taxes and fees to be paid when importing your vehicle on to Spanish Plates and these can vary slightly depending on the region that you live, including a fee to be paid to the local town hall (ayuntamiento) and also to the local traffic department (Jefatura Provincial de Tráfico).

It’s important to make sure that all the correct taxes are paid when importing your vehicle onto Spanish Number Plates so that is why we provide you with official receipts from the tax authorities, once paid. We’ve come across several situations where clients has used companies that do not pass on the official tax receipts.

They have later been fined by the Spanish authorities for not having paid the correct taxes at the time of importation. Needless to say this worked out much more expensive as they still had to pay the original shortfall on the import duty so this is why our process is transparent from start to finish!

ITV Test – Cost To Import Car Into Spain

In order to successfully import your car onto permanent Spanish number plates, the first thing is for us to arrange an engineers report for the vehicle. This is carried out by a fully qualified matriculation engineer. If you are in possession of an original manufacturers Certificate of Conformity this can be used instead of an engineers report.

It is then necessary for your vehicle to undergo an ITV test (inspección técnica de vehículos) which is a controlled test to make sure that the vehicle is road worthy. After the initial test for importation this will then be carried out every two years up until the car is two years old, then annually for as long as the car is on the road.

On top off the ITV test a importation test is carried out on the vehicle, this is done at the same time as the ITV test. The importation test is a one off, once this is passed it will never be done again. If your vehicle doesn’t pass first time then you have two months to arrange any works that need to be carried out and return for a re-test.
